Wellington - New Zealanders are continuing to emigrate to Australia in near record numbers, according to official figures released on Tuesday showing them leaving at the rate of 800 a week last month. There was a net outflow of 30,600 more people leaving for Australia in the 12 months to April than arriving in the opposite direction, Statistics New Zealand reported. This was the highest annual total since 31,000 was recorded in 2000-01.

The emigration figure was up on the net 24,000 outflow to Australia in the year to April 2007, but the trend is not new, having peaked at 33,700 in 1988-89.

As New Zealanders leave, immigrants continue to pour into the country but in declining numbers.

There was a net migration gain of 4,700 in the year to April 2008, less than half the annual average of 11,800 between 1990 and 2007, and well down on the peak 42,500 recorded in 2002-03, Government Statistician Geoff Bascand said.

He released figures showing a steady drop in net migration over the last four years, from 33,326 in 2004, to 12,808 in 2005, 11,407 in 2006 and 9,744 in 2007.

Britain has been the biggest source of immigrants to New Zealand since 2004, with a net inflow of 7,100 in the 12 months to April, although this was down from 9,900 the previous year.

Other countries providing net inflows over the last year were India (4,200), the Philippines (3,300), Fiji (2,500), South Africa (2,300), China (1,900), and Germany (1,600).
